How to select new flooring for your home

Selecting new floor covering for your home can be a frustrating experience, especially with the broad range of products currently available. In order to help you shop for flooring that best meets your needs, consider the following guidelines.

To begin with, think about the specifics of the room or rooms you are shopping for:

Will you be personally using this room or are you sprucing up your home before you sell or rent it?

What is the room used for?

How much traffic does this room get each day?

Is it accessible to any outside doors?

How many children and pets do you have?

What is the décor of the room (think about what "look" or "feel" you want to achieve)?

Does the room have several windows allowing in direct sunlight?

Before visiting Southern Flooring you may want to:

Draw a simple sketch of the room including where any doors or closets are located.

Make a note about the amount of sunlight entering into the room and which direction the room faces.

If you are able, try to determine what is under the existing floor.

If you can, bring any wallpaper or fabrics being used in the room. This way, you can consider a range of colors that will mesh with or enhance your existing décor. When picking a color, remember that dark colors tend to make a room appear smaller and cozier, whereas lighter colors can make a room appear more spacious. In addition, a room color can affect your mood, with warmer colors having an energizing effect and cooler tones bringing about a sense of calm and serenity. Lastly, when considering color, please remember that the lighting in the store is not the same as the lighting in your home. As a result, you may want to ask if you can take a sample of the carpet home.
