Emergency backup generators          source: Mr. Electric

An automatic home standby generator monitors the utility power coming into your house. When there is an outage, the generator automatically turns itself on and provides power to pre-specified areas of your house.  When the utility power is restored, the generator switches your house back to utility and turns the generator off.  This type of reliable back up power is convenient because you never have to go outside to turn on the generator as you would a portable unit and you don't have to be home for it to work.

The unit needs to be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber (to handle the gas connection).  If your installer is not authorized by the manufacturer, once installed it is a good idea to have a factory-authorized technician for your unit do a thorough start up inspection on the unit through a local dealer or distributor.  This will update the actual warranty start date (based on the warranty start up, not the ship date) and will ensure the unit was installed properly.
